MRP, MES, Shop Floor & BDE in Odoo explained – What's behind it?
With BDE, Odoo digitally captures production times, work steps, and feedback – directly at the workstation. This enables real-time collection and analysis of actual data, which is then used for planning, post-calculation, and optimization.
IIoT connects machines, sensors, and systems on the shop floor directly with Odoo. Thanks to Odoo’s own IoT Box acting as a bridge to a wide range of machines and devices (e.g. measuring instruments, scales, foot switches, etc.), these can be directly integrated into the system. This enables automatic data collection, condition monitoring, and live feedback directly from the equipment – creating a connected, data-driven production environment.
Odoo, together with the Manufacturing module, offers an integrated MES solution. Work steps are defined through routings, and feedback (e.g. start/stop, scrap, material consumption) is recorded directly on the shop floor via a touchscreen interface. Production progress is visible in real time. Additionally, quality checks, maintenance tasks, and time tracking can be integrated – making it ideal for digital shop floor control.
Odoo uses MRP II to calculate material requirements based on orders, inventory levels, and replenishment rules. Missing materials are clearly displayed in the system and can be automatically replenished through purchase orders, manufacturing orders, or internal transfers. This makes material planning efficient and largely automated. Additionally, open quotations (sales) and requests for quotation (purchases) can also be factored directly into the demand planning process in Odoo.
OEE measures the efficiency of production equipment based on the factors of availability, performance, and quality. In Odoo, these metrics can be recorded and analyzed through the Manufacturing and Maintenance modules to identify production losses and specifically improve equipment efficiency.
The PLM module in Odoo enables the management of product changes, versions, and technical documents. It is directly linked to bill of materials and manufacturing processes and organizes revisions in a structured way. Furthermore, through integration with the Shopfloor app, it even promotes efficient collaboration between development and production.
With the Odoo Shopfloor app, the shop floor goes paperless: production workers use tablets to view digital work instructions, start orders, provide feedback, and report completions or issues directly in the system—everything live and centrally controlled.
